Since 2003 he has directed for companies including Boston Lyric Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Scottish Opera (productions including Le nozze di Figaro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte).Īllen was made a CBE in 1989 and knighted in 1999. He appears widely in concert and recital, his repertory ranging from oratorio and Lieder to songs from musicals and folksongs.

He has sung for all the major British companies, for many international companies including La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Vienna State Opera and Bavarian State Opera and at the Salzburg Festival. He returns to The Royal Opera in the 2018/19 Season as Don Alfonso.Īllen was born in County Durham and studied singing at the Royal College of Music.
